JULY TIP OF THE MONTH

Five steps to building an effective resume:
  • Tailor your resume to include the relevant information for each position
  • Condense your objective statement into a single sentence
  • Use a positive tone and action verbs to describe your previous work experience
  • Use bullet points starting with action verbs, avoiding narrative formats (“I”, “We”, etc.)
  • Do not feel obligated to include every job you have ever held.
SHAREHOLDER OUTREACH
Doyon is growing at a rapid pace. As the corporation continues to diversify, a well-trained workforce is essential. This substantial growth presents an opportunity to significantly increase shareholder opportunities. In keeping with Doyon’s mission and values, the Doyon Family of Companies takes our goal of increasing shareholder opportunities seriously, which is why the shareholder outreach program was developed.

Shareholder outreach offers many support services, including:
  • Informing shareholders of skills, training and/or education requirements for Doyon jobs.
  • Informing shareholders on how to find gainful employment within Doyon.
  • Informing college students of internships within the Doyon Family of Companies.
  • Encouraging youth readiness for employment opportunities with Doyon.
  • Identifying funding for higher education and/or training.
  • Offering roustabout training (as needed).
TALENT BANK
A major initiative of the shareholder outreach program is the Doyon talent bank profile. This is a tool that allows shareholders to advise Doyon of their skills and interests. The talent bank will assist Doyon in increasing shareholder hire within the Doyon Family of Companies. Please note that the talent bank profile is not an application for employment, and it is still the shareholder’s responsibility to pursue employment opportunities by applying for current job openings at www.doyon.com.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Doyon’s internship program helps to enhance shareholders’ job skills, knowledge and abilities. Shareholders are given the opportunity to gain marketable experience, building that bridge from the classroom to the workplace. Internships provide invaluable benefits, such as gaining industry-specific experience with on-the-job training, learning new job skills and creating a network of contacts.

The available intern positions vary by year and by subsidiary. In past years, Doyon has offered intern positions at:
  • Doyon Drilling
  • Doyon Emerald
  • Doyon Foundation
  • Doyon Utilities
  • Doyon, Limited
    • Accounting
    • Administration
    • Communications
    • Enrollment
    • Human Resources
    • Legal
    • Operations
    • Shareholder Relations
Doyon begins recruitment for our summer internships each January, and most interns are in their positions starting in May/June. The duration of the internship will vary between positions.

Internship opportunities will be posted on the jobs section of Doyon’s website. All students will be required to complete a talent bank profile and apply for the internship online at www.doyon.com.

CAREER EXPLORATION
Finding a career and planning for your future can sometimes seem overwhelming. Whether you are in high school or a recent college student, it is important to determine what your interests and abilities currently are.

Why is this important? The answer is simply because you can save yourself a lot of time when it comes to picking a college major. When you understand your skill sets, you can develop them early and better prepare yourself for your future in the working world.

A self-assessment is the first step in finding a career that is right for you. Below you will find a couple resources to help you evaluate your skills and values, and match them to a career that is right for you:
  • Alaska Career Information System (AKCIS): This site is open to all Doyon shareholders. To obtain the log-in and password information, email outreach@doyon.com with “AKCIS” in the subject line.
  • Occupational Outlook Handbook: The occupational outlook handbook is a nationally recognized source of career information, designed to provide valuable assistance to individuals making decisions about their future careers. The handbook is revised every two years.
